Pyro Surf – first surfing dry suit

It looks like soon there will be no excuse left for not surfing through the whole year even in the coldest places on Earth. After Rip Curls battery heated H-Bomb wetsuit, we are offered another solution – a dry suit for surfing. Dry suits are used in different sports (especially diving) for quite a long time but dry suits and surfing never went well together. Now all this has changed.

Dry suit for surfing?

Ocean Pyro Pro Dry Suit

This is what an ordinary modern dry suit from Ocean Rodeo looks like

What is a dry suit? Dry suits are suits for water sports that are completely watertight and do not leave even a drop of water to come into your suit. Dry suit does not keep you warm, but it does keep you dry so you can wear whatever you want under the dry suit. Not a leather jacket but fleece for instance. Dry suits are used in different sports (especially diving) for quite a long time but dry suits and surfing never went well together. Dry suits were just to clumsy, to baggy to withstands the demands of surfing and other really active water sports. Now a Canadian extreme watersports dry suits manufacturer Ocean Rodeo Sports came up with a new design and the world’s first surfing dry suit – Pyro Surf. Pyro surf uses Dry Core™ technology.

Dry Core™ technology

Dry Core Tecnology from Ocean RodeoDry Core technology is based on patented dual membrane technology. A form fitting outer stretch layer delivers a wrinkle free streamlined surface for fast swimming and incredible mobility, while at the same time offering abrasion protection to the inner Dry Core. Built with time tested polyurethane coated nylon, latex neck, wrist and ankle seals Dry Core is sealed closed with a dive grade dry suit zipper guaranteed to keep the water out. With the two layers working in unison, the stretchable outer layer regulates trapped air from within the dry core, allowing for easy duck dives and fast swimming. At less than .05mm thick and made of two independent layers, this suit offers an unlimited range of motion unparalleled by any traditional neoprene suit now available. Almost completely eliminating any wetsuit related resistance from thick restrictive neoprene.

Dry Core Technology provides a dry barrier against the elements. What you wear under the dry layer keeps you warm!

The two layers of Dry Core easily separate for servicing by means of Velcro fastening strips found at the wrists, ankles and zipper. Dry Core Technology eliminates the cold freeze, chill, restriction and excess buoyancy found with traditional cold water neoprene wetsuits. Rigorously tested in the frigid waters off the coast of Vancouver Island BC, Canada it’s safe to say cold water surfing will never be the same again.

Pyro surf dry suit advantages

  • Streamlined: forms a wrinkle free streamlined surface for fast swimming and mobility, stretchable outer layer squeezes out excess trapped air for easy duck dives,
  • Unlimited Range of Motion: less than 0.5mm thick,
  • Light weight: with the appropriate thermal undergarment are half the weight of wetsuits designed for similar water conditions,
  • Huge temperature Range: The Dry Core Technology provides a dry barrier against the elements but it is what you wear under the suit that keeps you warm,
  • Fast Dry: Dry Core bladder will not absorb water.

Do you stay completely dry in Pyro Surf drysuit? The water pressure associated with wipeouts can force small amounts of water past the seals of the suits. Improved dryness can be achieved by wearing gloves, boots and a hood that lay over the latex seals to keep any water seeping in past the seal. Additionally, during a prolonged session you are likely to sweat inside your suit and your undergarments may become damp. Also during a wipeout excess air may be forced out of the suit by the external water pressure. As this air leaves your neck seal a small amount of water may squirt in resulting in a damp neck. To minimize this risk crouch into a ball before going out and squeeze most of the air out of your suit.
