#14-15: A Blast From The Snow Covered Mountains

Finding green walls in the middle of 54 knot winds.

You would think that with only a short fetch the more wind there is the bigger the waves. So 54 knot forecast would be right up there with the max what you can normally expect to get. That means 1-2 times a year conditions. But, we also witnessed 50 knot winds and completely flat conditions, so you can never really 100% know what to expect. Apart from wind strength it’s also in the angles. Wrong wind angle and wind blows straight into the spot. 54 knots in your face, not much surfing can be done when this happens. Or the angle can be wrong and the waves don’t arrive at all. But it was time for the waves to get bigger here after lots of mid sized sessions and this time the conditions were right. First day it was a bit smaller or… let’s say I had to wait much longer for the sets to arrive. But it was also less wind and this is why all the sets were good! I had like 7 or 8 waves top in 2 hours, but all of them were nice ones. Next day it was bigger. Sets rolling in almost constantly. If you got one all the way to the inside it was a workout to paddle back out. Whitewater lines were to strong and super close together leaving no time to paddle in between the duckdives. Luka even had walked up the beach where there were less waves. Because it was bigger there was also more wind and lots of waves didn’t break as nicely as the days before. Closeouts. But on the other hand it was really sick to get plenty of real sized waves here, feel some power. And because we could surf without much waiting for the sets, it was not that cold. Even though the wind was coming straight from the Velebit mountains, 1.600m high and covered with fresh snow. Water had 11C and air 4C.
