Tips for First Time Snowboarders

Tips for first time snowboarders

There’s a reason why snowboarding is one of the most popular winter sports- it’s fun!  Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a newbie on the slopes, snowboarding is an activity that can be enjoyed by anyone at any skill level.  If you’re new to snowboarding, here are a few tips for first time snowboarders to make your first time a little easier!

Bundle up with the right clothing

What you wear is the key to having a great snowboarding experience, so make sure to come prepared with the right clothing.  Layering is important, as you can add or remove articles of clothing throughout the day. Your first layer should be a thermal set that clings to your body to keep heat in and moisture out.  Next comes your second layer, typically a sweater, sweatshirt, or pullover hoodie. Other accessories, like hats, gloves and neck gaiters can provide additional warmth, especially when you’re blazing down the mountain.  Finally, make sure you have a good winter jacket that’s both warm and waterproof, as well as pants and boots, to ensure you stay dry while you’re on the slopes.

Gear tips for first time snowboarders

Unless you plan on snowboarding often, there is no reason you should purchase your own board.  Instead, look into renting one from the ski shop at your local slopes. A snowboarding instructor will be able to guide you through the process of choosing a board, as well as help you stand on the board and anything else you may need to know.  Your instructor can also show you how to get on the ski lift, as this can be difficult to navigate while strapped to a snowboard. Additional gear, like goggles and helmets, can provide extra comfort and help you feel more prepared for your first snowboarding experience.

Before your first lesson you might want to also check out this guide on how to correctly set your snowboard stance (and what is snowboard stance :) ). your instructor should help you with that, but it will be much easier if you will know what he is talking about. Don’t go it alone

If you’ve never snowboarded before, it’s important that you enlist the help of an instructor your first time.  If possible, try to take a few snowboarding lessons before hitting the slopes solo.  Most ski resorts offer some sort of lessons, either one-on-one or in a group, so choose what feels right for you.  During a snowboarding lesson, your instructor will teach you the basics of snowboarding, like how to stand up, slide downhill, and stop.  Snowboarding lessons can be beneficial for anyone who’s new to snowboarding, and you’ll feel more confident heading out onto the slopes for the first time.
