There were two dogs on this trip and I think they had a trip of their (short) lifetime:). Surf wise, the trip really began on the first day of the new year. From then on it was possible to surf every single day. Before it was so flat that it was almost weird how the wast sea can be so calm. First day after a wild new year party I managed to surf Sa Mesa Longa and then spent the rest of the day recovering:). It was small anyway. Next day the waves got bigger and we had a fun session on the same spot and then in the evening we moved south into the wilderness. We spent there the next three days surfing, watching sick sunsets, eating bbq, walking over sand dunes and beaches and enjoying the after session coffee in the warm Sardinia sun. First day was the biggest and then it got smaller and smaller. I barely surfed on Friday on the longest board I had on the trip, the 7’3″ mini mal. The next day the first big storm of the trip should arrive. Just in time for us to go home. Usually the first day is really messy and it’s after the storm passes that the surf spots really shine.
So we had our eyes on a protected bay a bit north from where we were staying. Unfortunately the road to the bay was closed just far enough above the bay that walking down to the beach was not an option. Damn. We drove on to the next beach 10km further north. In the morning I saw that I made a surf forecast mistake. I was looking for beaches that would be protected from the gale force northwest winds that the storm would bring, but the whole first half od the day the waves were from the south west without any wind at all. A spot that works on NW does not necessarily work on SW. So we checked another spot and I ended up surfing both. First one in the morning and second one around 11:30am. A line of black clouds was closing in from the sea and I knew when it reached the shore that would be the storm. Around 1pm the calm was over. Wind picked up it’s speed from 0 to 40kn in like 5-10 minutes, the sea got blown out, waves crazy and the session was finished. Time to go home.
With a detour. Even though the storm wind was directed straight into Sardinia, the waves produced were so big that some of them dispersed in other directions reaching Tuscany. Fun sized waves were forecasted for Sunday and no wind, should be fun. And it was, maybe conditions wise it was the best session of the trip. Just super crowded.
