Balancing surfing and covid-19 is hard, especially if you come from a country with no waves. Well, almost no waves. But relying on Slovenian waves is kind of like relying on the government to solve your problems :). So not really something you can count on. So a trip to the W coast of Italy, while the borders are still not under covid lock down, was long overdue. At the first sight of a good forecast plans were being made.
It looked really good, even W coast of Italy does not often get more than a few consecutive days of surfing and waves in the summer. Autumn and winter is of course another story. It started with winds from the south so we drove to the south of Tuscany.
First day was okayish, waves rising, nice weather, but not really epic conditions. The waves were forecasted to rise over night, but it still looked kind of small for the point break to start working. And there was some devil wind in the forecast so Sunday looked really sketchy. Well, dawn patrol the next morning together with crowds of Italian surfers made us smile. The point was working, almost firing! And it was completely glassy. It was a bit hard to get a wave but not impossible. And if you get a good one you are in for a long ride! Awesome morning session.
In the afternoon the wind kicked in and we almost called it a day if it weren’t for Miha’s exploring nerve itching him to check a beach on the other side of the bay. The other side turned glassy with the wind change and mellow waves with mellow crowds but really fun walls on the sets were rolling in. Another sick session.
Day three we woke up further up north. An unusual rainy day with a bit messy waves that cleaned up as the day progressed. Evening session was already almost classic, sun came out, so did the long clean lines. We were worried what would Tuesday bring. Small waves in the forecast. we even brought mountain bikes for the last day, but with all the rain muddy ex DH track did not sound that inviting.
When we woke up on Tuesday we were greeted with classic conditions. It was almost bigger than the day before! Clean, sunny, sucking from the reef…waves like they should be! Two sessions, one on the left side and it was unfortunately time to go home. Waves were still breaking when we left. Sad. :)

Before the trip, I also managed to catch a few waves on the 20 km spot, but it was so small I don’t even have one photo of the waves. It got better later in the day, but we had other plans. Still nice to catch a few.
