#38-40: Surfing Finale Ligure

This was a MTB trip to Finale Ligure but the constant ondulation of the sea made it hard to just ride our bikes. Actually due to winds constantly being forecasted as “molto forte” which means very strong (read 50-60km/h) and waves constantly bein in the 3m range it was equali hard to surf. But we managed to do either one each day and on November 4th we even surfed in the morning and biked in the afternoon. My first surf/bike combo:)!

First surf was I guess the best one. While we were driving to Finale I was checking the webcams and I noticed on one of the webcams small waves breaking next to a pier. The whole coast was flat, with small swell making a shorebreak landing everywhere you looked. So I made a mental note to check the webcam spot when it will again be small. Two days later it was Monday, weather was cloudy going towards rain and after two sunny days of biking it was time to surf and to check the small spot. Waves were super small but super clean and breaking nicely with no one out. So we paddled out and had such a fun session. Even when it was small it was good, but then the swell started to arrive and waves got bigger and bigger, but they never lost that breaking perfectly shape. A fun session turned into a sick one. And since we caught the arrival of the swell (by accident tbh), there were like 5 people in the water at most.

Next surf was at the same spot, again going for smaller forecast before the wind and huge waves hit, but it was windy during the night and the sea was messy. Waves were bigger than last time, but not nearly as fun. We surfed for 2,5 hours and then we had enough. We were already sitting back in our van drinking coffee when the storm hit. I really mean hit. Bam, in 2 seconds the trees were shaking, the van was shaking…after the first gust of wind eased off a bit, strong rain and still very strong winds lasted throughout the day. We were driving along the coast, searching for protected spots hidden behind capes and piers, but as soon as we got away from the wind and 3m seas the waves were just too small. The last spot I wanted to check was behind a marina. Lucky for me, just when we arrived a big wave had to roll through because it broke far our and rolled perfeclty all the way to the beach. It was a deep water spot, so for the next 10-15 minutes it was completely flat. But I had a mental image of that one wave in my head so I waited a bit for the peak of the forecast and went in. As soon as I came in I had three consequitive waves, even better than the one I saw from the beach. It was also way bigger than it looked. Big “high tideish” walls pushing me so fast that the board was jumping up and down under my feet on not completely glassy sea surface. I was screaming how sick it was. But after those 3 waves and a couple more similar ones in the next half hour, the waves started t get more rare and smaller and smaller. After maybe 2 hours I paddled in.

Last surf the forecast was similar to the second not so good one. But this time it was completely different. No wind during the night and in the morning (forecast was wrong), bigger waves and sunny morning skies. It looked perfect! I was also way more crowded than the last two times. We quickly got in but getting a good wave was hard. Lots of closeouts and lots of people. Still a fun morning session followed by a pedal up from Isallo and a ride down the Revenant trail. Good times.
