8 Things to Wear and Pack on a Hiking or Backpacking Adventure

Before going on a hike, whether a short day trip or a more extended backpacking adventure, you should ensure you are prepared. Hiking safely means bringing some things with you before heading out and wearing appropriate clothing. 

Check that you have these eight things before you hit the trails. 

Proper clothes

Hiking is an activity that can leave you feeling a bit strained. There is a chance you will end up getting dirty on the trail as well. You shouldn’t wear clothing you care about because it might get ruined. 

Make sure you pack clothes that will keep you warm enough on the trail but won’t cause heat exhaustion. One idea for suitable hiking clothing is HECS camo since it is made for the outdoors. Ideal outdoor clothes are light, warm, breathable and made of materials that won’t get wet and/or will keep you warm even when wet from either your sweat or rain.

Extra socks

An extra pair of socks is a great idea for any hike. Walking in wet socks can cause you to get blisters more easily. Weather is not always predictable, and many trails can have puddles caused by rain or snow that could leave you with wet socks. 

Good shoes

Hiking or trekking requires a lot of walking. You want shoes that fit well, have traction, and support your foot. There are many shoes made specifically for hiking that are perfect to wear. Just make sure you get a pair that fits you correctly and break them in before a long hike so your feet can stay as comfortable as possible. Never go on a hike in brand new shoes.

Extra layer

Having an extra layer in a bag or tied around your waist in case the weather ends up being colder than you expected is a good rule of thumb. You want to maintain a healthy body temperature while on the trail, so layers are the best way to dress. And outer shell that stops wind and rain is a must.

Sun protection

Damage caused by the sun can be hazardous and make your trip less enjoyable. A hat and sports glasses that can help protect you from the sun are essential for hiking. 

You should make sure that any exposed skin is protected with sunscreen to keep you from getting sunburned. Chapstick is also good to have on hand to keep your lips from getting damaged by the sun. 

Extra food and water

Staying hydrated and well-nourished is vital to staying safe on a hike. In case of an emergency that keeps you on the trail longer than you planned, you should pack extra food and water. Having snacks to eat during breaks on the trail or at the end of a hike is a good plan to ensure you have enough energy. 

First aid kit

You should always bring a first aid kit with you when you go hiking. Being prepared for emergencies is essential, and outdoor first aid kits are perfect for ensuring you have what you need, just in case. 

Navigation equipment

Getting lost while hiking is a real possibility, so you should try to pack a map and compass with you just in case you accidentally end up off-trail or are unsure where to go while on your hike.
