If you’ve recently purchased a boat, are thinking about buying one, or simply have a friend who’s into boating and wants to bring you along, it’s always good to have some background knowledge before you get on the water. Here are a few tips for owning a boat, and simply having a good time in one.

How to Take Care of a Boat

First of all, as a first-time boat owner, you’ll need to figure out how exactly to take care of your new boat baby. Like cars, boats need regular maintenance, and you’ll also need to keep it clean and running smoothly. On top of that, you’ll need to learn about winterizing your boat, how to store it safely, how to inspect it, and much more. If you have any boating friends, roping in their assistance will be helpful.

Watching the Weather

Unfortunately, boating is a heavily weather-dependent pastime, and you’ll need to learn the cues that tell you when it’s a bad idea to get on the water. If you notice a stiff breeze or thunderstorms in the weather forecast, it’s best to stay indoors and pick something else to do. Rather wait it out for clear, sunny skies. This type of weather is not only safer but makes for a far more enjoyable boating day out.

How to Be Safe

Boating safety is an essential factor to take into consideration. While it’s a typically safe way to spend your summer days, you still need to be cognizant of various safety factors. Of course, lifejackets are a must, and simply driving sensibly is important. More than that, simple safety tips like remaining seated in the boat, holding onto something, and wearing sunscreen are good to keep in mind. Children aboard should always be supervised by a parent or guardian, and don’t forget to tell them the boating rules too.

What to Keep on Board

In terms of safety, you should always have life jackets and floatation devices on board your boat. It’s a good idea to have a first aid kit with you at all times too. You’ll also need registration and documentation with you, and some cleaning supplies. In terms of enjoyment, bring along some easy-to-eat food, drinks, a camera or your phone to snap some pictures and any other gear you need to have a good day out. Waterproof bags are another good option to have around, for important items like smartphones or cameras.

How to Handle an Emergency

If you’re going to get out on the water, you first need to make sure you know how to react in a boating emergency. Staying calm is the first and most important thing – if you’re panicking, you won’t be very capable of handling anything serious. Take a moment to assess the situation and see what you can do to help, and signal for help immediately, if you need it. Your next priority is to assist anyone who needs help with a life jacket or anything else.
